Northern Coast & Kroumirie Hills (Bizerte, Tabarka)
August continues the sun-drenched pattern with daytime highs often in the high 20s°C; the sea is at its warmest and swimming is effortless around the sheltered coves. Coastal nightlife and seaside restaurants are lively and prices for popular hotels peak; shaded terraces and sea-sheltered beaches are the most pleasant spots. Sudden, rarer hot southerly gusts (sirocco) can push temperatures up briefly and bring dust-carry sunglasses and a scarf.
Cap Bon & Gulf of Tunis (Tunis, Carthage, Hammamet, Nabeul)
Early autumn feels like an extension of summer through September, with warm, pleasant days and a gentle drying of previously lush gardens-great for late swimming in Hammamet. Crowds thin as school terms resume, making it one of the best months to combine cultural touring in Tunis with beach time. Do keep an eye on weather reports: Mediterranean storms (including rare medicanes) are more likely from late September into November.
Central Coast & Sahel (Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia, Sfax)
September’s extension of summer offers warm sea temperatures and gentler crowds as European holidaymakers head home; daytime temperatures typically remain in the mid to high 20s°C. The Sahel is excellent for late-season swimming, sailing and exploring the medinas at a relaxed pace. Watch for occasional autumnal storms later in the month that can gust wind and briefly churn the harbour waters.
Central Highlands & Dorsal Mountains (Kairouan, Zaghouan, Kasserine, Djebel ech Chambi)
September offers significant relief as temperatures fall from summer peaks, with pleasant days in the low to mid-20s°C and cool nights-great for renewing hiking plans. Olive harvest activity begins in surrounding slopes and local roads can be busier with agricultural traffic; it’s a good month to combine cultural sites with moderate treks. Bring a mix of light layers and a warmer jacket for mountain evenings.
Southern Tunisia & the Sahara (Tozeur, Douz, Chott el Jerid, Matmata)
September brings meaningful relief from peak heat; daytime temperatures slide into the high 20s to low 30s°C and nights are pleasantly cool again for camping. This is a prime month for long desert excursions and multi-day routes across star-filled nights, while date palms around Tozeur start to ripen later in the month. Pack lighter layers for the day and a warmer top for crisp desert nights.
