Tricity, Poland Area
Tri-city metropolitan area of Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot
Along the Baltic coast three cities-Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot-offer Gdańsk's medieval old town and shipyard history, Sopot's pier and beaches, and Gdynia's maritime museums and port.
Tricity (Polish: Trójmiasto) is the contiguous metropolitan area on the southern shore of the Gulf of Gdańsk made up of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot. It is the largest urban area on Poland’s Baltic coast and a principal economic and cultural hub of Pomeranian Voivodeship.
Gdańsk’s restored medieval Long Market and former shipyards, Gdynia’s port and maritime infrastructure, and Sopot’s seaside resort amenities and its 511.5 metre wooden pier. The area is popular for beachgoing, maritime museums, coastal cycling routes and urban cultural events.
The modern Tricity grew through the 19th and 20th centuries, with Gdynia in particular expanding rapidly in the 1920s as Poland developed a new seaport. Today it combines historic architecture, interwar modernism and contemporary urban development along a narrow coastal strip.
Geographically the conurbation sits on Poland’s Baltic coast within Pomeranian Voivodeship, stretching roughly 30 kilometres along the shore from the outskirts of Gdańsk in the east to the suburban edges of Gdynia in the west.
- Transport: Commuter rail (SKM) links the three cities with frequent services along the coast, making inter-city transfers short and convenient.
- Population: The triangular urban area of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot forms a continuous metropolitan zone with a population of around 1.1 million.
What to See#
- Gdańsk: The largest and oldest of the three cities, with a medieval Long Market, historic shipyard areas and the former Hanseatic port which form the core of the region's cultural tourism.
- Gdynia: A purpose-built 20th century port city that expanded rapidly in the interwar period and today combines maritime industry with beaches and modernist architecture.
- Sopot: A compact seaside resort famous for its spa history and the wooden pier that extends into the Gulf of Gdańsk for 511.5 metres, one of Europe's longest wooden piers.
