Trebević
Mountain Mountain overlooking Sarajevo, popular hiking and wartime site
A wooded mountain overlooking Sarajevo, Trebević attracts hikers and history-minded visitors to its ruined Olympic bobsleigh track, wartime relics and panoramic views across the city and surrounding hills.
Trebević is a mountain ridge near Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a summit of about 1,628 metres. It is well known locally for its proximity to the city and for recreational opportunities.
The ridge offers panoramic viewpoints over Sarajevo and the surrounding valleys, with trails of varying difficulty for hikers and routes used by paragliders. A notable feature on the slopes is the derelict bobsleigh and luge track from the 1984 Winter Olympics, which attracts visitors interested in 20th-century Olympic history and urban exploration.
Trebević hosted events for the 1984 Winter Olympics, including the bobsleigh and luge competitions, and infrastructure from that period remains on the mountain. During the 1992-95 Bosnian War the area, including installations and the cable car, suffered extensive damage; in the years since it has been partly rehabilitated for recreation.
The mountain sits immediately to the south of Sarajevo, a short drive or a few hours’ walk from the city centre, forming a rugged backdrop to the urban area and rising above the Sarajevo basin.
- Access and activities: Easily reached on foot from Sarajevo by marked trails and by seasonal road access; the summit and ridge are popular for hiking, paragliding and winter recreation.
What to See #
- Summit (approx. 1,628 m): The mountain summit reaches about 1,628 metres and offers panoramic views over Sarajevo and the surrounding Dinaric Alps foothills.
- 1984 Olympic bobsleigh track (ruins): Remains of the bobsleigh and luge track used for the 1984 Winter Olympics, which were heavily damaged during the 1992-95 siege of Sarajevo and now stand as an abandoned sporting relic.
How to Get to Trebević #
Trebević is the wooded mountain overlooking Sarajevo, about 8-10 km southeast of the city centre. By car you reach the main parking and trailheads via the winding mountain road from central Sarajevo (allow roughly 20-30 minutes depending on traffic); several marked hiking routes lead up from Sarajevo neighbourhoods.
There is also the Trebević cable car (Trebevićka žičara) linking Sarajevo with the mountain - the upper station gives immediate access to viewpoints and walking trails.
Tips for Visiting Trebević #
- Aim for early morning or late afternoon on Trebević for the best light over Sarajevo and to avoid the busiest mid-day hours; views are clearest then and the city below is much quieter.
- Take the recently restored Sarajevo cable car to reach the mountain quickly and enjoy panoramas during the ascent rather than driving up and hunting for parking.
- Make time to walk to the old Olympic bobsleigh track and the wartime observation points near the summit-these ruined installations offer strong photo opportunities that many visitors miss.
- Avoid weekend afternoons when locals and day-trippers head up; a weekday or sunrise visit gives you far more space on the main viewpoints and trails.
