Gazi Husrev-begov bezistan is an Ottoman-era covered market in Sarajevo’s historic Baščaršija district, established in the 16th century as part of the vakuf of Gazi Husrev-beg. The structure historically served as a center for trade in textiles, crafts and luxury goods.

Architecturally it is a stone-built, vaulted market building that organized commercial activity under covered arcades rather than as open stalls. The bezistan has functioned as a trade facility and retail complex from Ottoman times through to the present, undergoing repairs and conservation work over the centuries.

The bezistan forms part of the Ottoman core of Sarajevo and sits close to other historic civic and religious buildings founded by Gazi Husrev-beg. It is located within the old town streets and is accessed on foot from the main Baščaršija square.

The site remains in use for small shops and craft traders and is a common place to find traditional Bosnian handicrafts and textiles.

• Location: Sits within Sarajevo’s historic Baščaršija quarter, immediately adjacent to several other Ottoman-era vakif buildings including the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque. It remains a concentrated area for traditional crafts and small retail units.

The bezistan is in Sarajevo’s Baščaršija quarter, within easy walking distance of the Latin Bridge and the city’s central tram stops. Most visitors arrive on foot from the historic center; taxis and buses serve the wider city.

• Explore the small shops in the bezistan for locally made goods and restored crafts - much of the market economy here remains small-scale.
• Visit early in the day when vendors are setting up; the architecture shows best in the softer light.
• Look for plaques and inscriptions that explain Ottoman endowments (waqf) that funded the original complex.
