The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow is a national war memorial set at the Kremlin Wall in Alexander Garden to honour Soviet citizens who fell in World War II. It consists of a sarcophagus, an eternal flame and a memorial inscription integrated into the Kremlin’s defensive wall.

The memorial is protected and ceremonially guarded by the Kremlin Regiment; changing-of-the-guard ceremonies and official wreath-laying events take place regularly. It serves as a focal point for national remembrance and state commemorations.

The tomb was established in the postwar period as part of Soviet commemorative practice and was later formalized as a site of national significance to mark the sacrifice of unknown soldiers. Over time it became an established place for public and official acts of remembrance.

The memorial sits directly at the Kremlin Wall in Alexander Garden, adjacent to Red Square and within the centre of Moscow’s historic and political core.

The Tomb is on the western edge of the Kremlin, in Alexander Garden (Aleksandrovskiy Sad). From the Kremlin/Kitay-Gorod area it is a 5-10 minute walk along the Kremlin walls; nearest metro stations are Alexandrovsky Sad (lines 4 and 3) and Biblioteka Imeni Lenina (line 1) - both are about a 5-10 minute walk.

• Respect the solemnity: photographing is allowed but loud behavior, climbing the memorial plinth, or sitting on the steps is frowned upon.
