Southern Coast & Lomé

May is one of the wettest months near the Gulf of Guinea - Lomé and nearby beaches see frequent downpours that alternate with bright, humid breaks; days generally feel warm, 27-30°C. Waterfalls near Kpélé and Mount Agou, a short inland drive, begin to surge and are at their most dramatic, though trails turn slippery. Travelers should allow extra time for intercity buses; the rains can make dirt roads to village destinations much slower.

Southern Highlands & Mount Agou (Kpalimé / Atakpamé)

May brings persistent wet weather that drenches the surrounding hills and swells cascades near Kpalimé - a dramatic period for nature photography but slippery underfoot. Temperatures stay mild, often in the mid-twenties, and the mist on higher slopes can make mornings cool. Travel times on secondary roads lengthen; waterproof covers for backpacks are essential and guided walks are advisable on muddy trails.

Central Plain & Sokodé

May is solidly within the wet season with frequent heavy showers and often all-day rains that make secondary roads challenging; daytime temperatures moderate to the high twenties. The countryside becomes spectacularly green and waterfalls in central parks swell, but flooding is possible along low plains. For photographers and nature trips this is rewarding, but expect interrupted itineraries and the need for flexible plans.

Kara & Northern Highlands

May is firmly in the wet season with frequent heavy showers and high humidity; temperatures are milder but the ground becomes waterlogged in places. Birdlife and small mammals are active around protected areas, and rivers swell-making river crossings on rural roads sometimes hazardous. If you’re aiming for wildlife photography, mid to late rainy season offers green backdrops, but expect travel delays and muddy campsites.

Savanes & Dapaong (Far North)

May opens the single rainy season: heavy, sometimes sudden downpours begin and continue through the next months, cooling the air but turning tracks to mud. Rivers around the Savanes fill rapidly and some remote crossings become impassable; consider a 4WD if you plan to explore far-flung sites. Mosquito protection is critical once rains begin, and some lodges operate on reduced schedules during storms.
