Southern Coast & Lomé
Clear, dry days and the Harmattan haze often linger over Lomé in January, bringing lower humidity and pleasantly warm temperatures around 25-30°C. The breeze off the Gulf of Guinea keeps the coast bearable and mornings can be dusty; pack light layers and a scarf for the breeze. Coastal markets are lively and beach walks are comfortable, but sea swimming may be choppy at times and sunscreen is still necessary.
Southern Highlands & Mount Agou (Kpalimé / Atakpamé)
January offers clear, pleasantly cool mornings around Mount Agou and Kpalimé; daytime highs are in the mid-to-high twenties and humidity is much lower than on the coast. Trails are dry and good for hiking through coffee and cocoa farms, and local craft markets are active. Pack light layers for cooler nights and a rain shell in case the Harmattan dust turns to a chilly breeze during evenings.
Central Plain & Sokodé
January’s dry Harmattan influence reaches the central plain with dusty mornings and lower humidity; Sokodé and surrounding towns feel hot by midday with temperatures in the high twenties to low thirties. Nights are cooler and clearer, making early-morning markets pleasant for exploration. Carry sun protection and a face covering for dusty winds, and remember that unpaved roads can be dusty and rough.
Kara & Northern Highlands
January brings cool nights and dry, dusty days as the Harmattan sweeps the Kara plateau; daytime temperatures are warm, usually in the high twenties, while the air feels surprisingly dry. This is an excellent month for visiting towns like Kara and nearby markets, though early mornings can be chilly; carry a light jacket and a scarf for dust. Road dust can be thick on unpaved routes so protect camera gear.
Savanes & Dapaong (Far North)
January in the far north is dominated by dry Harmattan winds: mornings can be cool while afternoons are hot and very dry, typically 30-35°C. Dapaong and surroundings are excellent for visiting dry-season markets and seeing remote villages as dust settles the countryside; campfires are common in the evenings so a warm layer helps. Bring strong sun protection and stay hydrated on long drives across the flat savannah.
