Tiber Island is a small, inhabited island in the Tiber River in central Rome, Italy, lying between the historic centre and Trastevere. It has a continuous built presence since antiquity and is easily reached on foot from both riverbanks.

On the island people encounter a compact piazza, a notable church, and the historic hospital complex, all within a short walking distance. The island is framed by the adjacent ancient bridges, which provide close views of the river and city along both banks.

The island has ancient Roman associations and later became the site of a medieval and modern hospital and church complex; bridges linking the island to the city date back to antiquity and the middle ages. Its built fabric reflects continuous reuse from Roman times through the present.

Sited in the historic centre of Rome, the island sits in the Tiber between the Jewish Ghetto area and Trastevere and is within easy walking distance of many central Roman landmarks.

• Access and views: Small enough to cross on foot in a few minutes; best views are from the adjacent Ponte Fabricio and Ponte Cestio.

• Fatebenefratelli hospital: A long-standing hospital complex occupying much of the island, visible from the river and adjacent bridges.

Reachable on foot via Ponte Fabricius from the Jewish Ghetto or via Ponte Cestio from Trastevere; both are 10-15 minute walks from major central sites such as Piazza Venezia or Campo de’ Fiori.

• Cross the bridges - Pons Fabricius (41 BCE) on the north and the Pedestrian Ponte Cestio to reach Trastevere - and watch how the island functions as a short, quiet respite between two lively districts.
• Visit during the Monday evening passeggiata to see families and couples strolling under plane trees.
• Notice the little boat‑shaped layout of the island; it's shaped by an ancient legend that the ship bringing the cult of Asclepius accidentally lodged there.
