Samoeng Loop

Samoeng Loop is a scenic mountain driving and motorcycle loop west of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand that links a series of rural towns and viewpoints through hilly countryside. The route is popular for day trips because it combines winding roads with views over forested slopes and rice terraces.

Highlights along the loop include numerous hairpin bends and lookout points that offer valley views, small local markets and roadside food stalls, and access to waterfalls and hill-tribe villages near the route. Typical trips cover roughly a 100-kilometre circuit depending on the start and finish points and chosen detours.

The loop developed as a collection of rural roads connecting the Samoeng district with surrounding areas and has become a recreational route rather than a single engineered attraction. Traffic is generally light outside peak holiday periods.

Geographically it lies west of Chiang Mai city in Chiang Mai Province; many riders and drivers begin the circuit from Chiang Mai and return there the same day.

• Road conditions: The route is a narrow, winding mountain road best ridden or driven in dry weather; many guidebooks recommend it for motorcycles because of frequent bends and scenic viewpoints.

Samoeng is a tiny rural town northwest of Chiang Mai, and while there’s little of interest in the town itself, as the only settlement of any size along the route it lends its name to one of the north’s most enjoyable outings: an easy, popular cruise around Doi Suthep mountain with Samoeng at roughly the halfway point. Renting a car or motorbike in Chiang Mai and driving the loop makes a great focus for a day trip.

The start and finish run along dull, straight highways, but these stretches are only about 10 kilometres long, and the rest passes through lovely mountain scenery. After heading north through Mae Rim, the route turns left onto Highway 1096 through the Mae Sa valley, which is packed with attractions. Just before Samoeng, a left branch leads south past the western flank of Doi Suthep, along a stretch lined with fancy resorts that lend the area an almost Alpine feel. Finally the road links up with Highway 108 near Hang Dong, from where a short drive north returns you to Chiang Mai.

The loop is reached from Chiang Mai. Drive or ride west on Highway 107 (toward Mae Rim) and follow local signs for Samoeng. Many riders start from central Chiang Mai, head north to Mae Rim, then pick up the loop; the full circuit generally returns toward Mae Rim or Mae Rim-Chiang Mai roads.

• If riding, start early to avoid agricultural and tourist traffic and catch cooler morning air.
• Fuel up in Chiang Mai or Mae Rim - petrol stations are sparse on the loop itself.
• Expect steep climbs and blind corners; a mid-sized motorcycle or car handles the switchbacks best.
