Ternate island

Ternate is a volcanic island in North Maluku, eastern Indonesia, historically significant as the centre of the Sultanate of Ternate and the clove trade. The island’s volcanic cone and compact urban coastline make it both a natural and historical landmark in the region.

The island contains an active volcano, extensive coastal settlements clustered around the bay of Ternate town, and several European-era fortifications. The combination of volcanic terrain and dense settlement gives the island a steep, compact feel with short distances between shore and high ground.

Ternate was the seat of a powerful indigenous sultanate from the medieval period and became a focal point for Portuguese and later Dutch colonial activity from the 16th century onward, driven by control of cloves and maritime trade. Colonial forts and the sultan’s compounds record that layered history.

Geographically Ternate lies off the west coast of Halmahera and is separated by narrow channels from neighbouring islands such as Tidore. The town of Ternate occupies a sheltered bay on the island’s west coast and is linked by ferry to nearby islands.

• Volcanic summit: Home to an active volcano whose summit exceeds 1,700 metres and is visible from much of the island; it is the island's dominant landmark.
• Spice trade history: One of the historic Spice Islands, long central to the clove trade and to early European colonial rivalry in eastern Indonesia.

• Mount Gamalama: An active stratovolcano rising from the island's interior, dominating the skyline and still showing fumarolic activity; its lava flows shape much of the island's topography.
• Ternate town and Sultanate area: The historic seat of the Sultanate of Ternate, a compact old town area with mosques and sultan's palaces that reflect the island's precolonial and colonial history.
• Coastal forts: Several colonial-era forts built by European powers on rocky headlands around the coast, constructed to control the clove trade.
