Tidore Island

Tidore Island is a volcanic island in North Maluku, eastern Indonesia, and was the centre of the historical Tidore Sultanate that played a major role in the regional spice trade. It lies among the Maluku Islands close to other historic spice islands.

The island offers a mix of coastal villages, plantations and volcanic landscapes rather than large tourist infrastructure; people visit for local culture, traditional villages and island scenery. Small guesthouses and day trips from nearby Ternate are the typical ways visitors experience the island.

Tidore rose to prominence as the seat of the Tidore Sultanate from the pre-colonial period and became a focus of contact and competition with European powers during the spice trade era. Colonial and postcolonial administrations changed political control over the centuries, but local sultanate institutions remain part of the island’s identity.

Geographically it sits in the western Pacific among the Maluku archipelago, within North Maluku province. The island is near the larger islands of Halmahera and Ternate and is reached by boat from regional ports.
