Telavi City
City in Georgia known for wine production
Telavi anchors Kakheti wine country with hilltop fortresses, tasting rooms at family cellars and a main square shaded by ancient plane trees; day trips reach Tsinandali estates and mountain vineyards.
Why Visit Telavi?#
Set in Kakheti’s sunlit Alazani Valley, this is Georgia’s wine country: travelers come for intimate qvevri winemaking, tasting rooms and estates like Tsinandali. The town’s relaxed Old Town and hilltop fortress give a sense of regional history, while table-centered supras and dishes such as khachapuri and local roasted meats make the food a highlight. Small guesthouses and family-run cellars offer warm hospitality and a chance to explore vineyard landscapes beyond the city.

How to Get to Telavi#
Telavi is reached mainly via Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) or Kutaisi International Airport (KUT), with onward connections by bus or marshrutka. There is no direct passenger rail to Telavi; most visitors travel overland from Tbilisi (Tbilisi Central / Didube marshrutka station).
Tbilisi International Airport (TBS): The main gateway to eastern Georgia; from TBS you can take a taxi to Telavi (approx. 70-90 GEL, 1.5-2 hours) or a marshrutka/minibus from Tbilisi city (see By Train & Bus) after you reach Tbilisi city centre (20-30 GEL taxi to city centre, ~30-40 minutes).
Kutaisi International Airport (KUT): Lower-cost flights arrive here; from Kutaisi you can take a direct long-distance bus or marshrutka to Telavi via Kutaisi bus station (approx. 25-40 GEL, 3-4 hours) or taxi (approx. 120-160 GEL, 3 hours).
Train: There is no direct intercity passenger rail service into central Telavi. The nearest major rail hub is Tbilisi Central Station (Tbilisi Central), from which onward buses or marshrutkas run to Telavi; Tbilisi-Telavi marshrutkas depart from the Didube or Navtlughi marshrutka stations (see bus paragraph).
Bus / Marshrutka: Regular marshrutkas run from Tbilisi (Didube station) to Telavi. Typical fare: approx. 8-12 GEL; journey time about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Longer-distance buses also run from Kutaisi and other regional centres (prices and times vary; expect 3-4 hours from Kutaisi).
How to Get Around Telavi#
Telavi is best navigated by marshrutka for intercity trips and by taxi or on foot locally. If you want wine-country freedom, rent a car for a day or two; otherwise marshrutkas and short taxi rides are the most practical, budget-friendly options.
- Marshrutka (minibus) (8-12 GEL) - The most common way to get to and around Telavi. Regular services link Telavi with Tbilisi (Didube), Kvareli and other Kakheti towns. Tickets are purchased at the station or to the driver; expect crowded but frequent departures during the day. Marshrutkas are cheap and fast but offer minimal luggage space and comfort.
- Regional bus (10-40 GEL) - Larger coaches run between major cities (Kutaisi, Tbilisi, Telavi) from central bus stations. Buses are slower than marshrutkas but more comfortable for longer journeys and luggage. Book tickets at stations or online for some operators.
- Taxi (5-160 GEL) - Taxis are widely available and useful for short hops, winery runs, or early-morning departures when marshrutkas don’t run. Agree a price or insist on the meter; rides to/from Tbilisi are relatively expensive but convenient for groups. Use local apps or ask hotel staff to arrange reliable drivers.
- Car hire (60-120 GEL/day) - Hiring a car gives flexibility to explore Kakheti’s vineyards and outlying monasteries. Roads around Telavi are generally passable but can be narrow; 4x4 is not required for main routes. Check insurance and local driving rules; parking in town is straightforward.
- Local taxis / rideshare (3-10 GEL) - For getting around Telavi itself, local taxis are quick and cheap compared with fixed-route services. There are no widespread international rideshare apps with strong presence; negotiate fares or ask your accommodation to call a driver.
- Walking - Telavi’s centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot; most sights, restaurants and wine bars are clustered around the main square and Shota Rustaveli Street. Expect some hills near the fortress.
