Teffedest Mountains
Mountains Granite massif in the Hoggar region, rugged peaks
Granite mountain range in southern Algeria known for steep rock faces and desert plateaus; climbers, geologists and desert travellers visit for rugged terrain and field study.
The Teffedest Mountains are a rugged granite massif in Tamanrasset Province in southern Algeria, forming part of the highlands of the central Sahara and notable for steep, rocky relief.
The range is characterized by dark granite peaks, narrow gorges and isolated valleys; its remoteness and altitude produce a markedly different environment to surrounding sand plains. The massif supports sparse desert-adapted flora and fauna and is mainly visited for geological interest and expedition-style travel rather than established tourist facilities.
The massif has long been part of Sahara travel and nomadic routes; there is no single built heritage site widely known across the range, and the area has been valued mainly for its geology and traditional pastoral use.
Found in southern Algeria’s Tamanrasset Province within the central Sahara, the Teffedest block lies inland from the Algerian coast and within the broader Hoggar/Ahaggar highland region.
- Geology and landscape: A compact granite massif within the central Sahara that forms a rugged, isolated landscape with steep cliffs and rocky outcrops.
- Elevation note: Contains peaks and ridges rising above 2,000 metres, making it one of the higher granitic blocks within southern Algeria's desert highlands.
