About Tassili Cultural Park#
Tassili Cultural Park (Tassili n’Ajjer) is a protected cultural and natural landscape on a high sandstone plateau in southeastern Algeria, noted for its extensive prehistoric rock art. The UNESCO World Heritage listing emphasises both the archaeological panels and the distinctive eroded sandstone terrain across a very large area of the central Sahara.
The site contains thousands of rock paintings and engravings located in sheltered galleries and gorges, including numerous depictions of humans, cattle and wild animals. Many images form long sequences that illustrate changing environments and lifestyles over millennia; specialists count over 15,000 individual motifs. The plateau also features prominent natural arches, pillars and deep canyons that are the result of long-term wind and water erosion.
Archaeological study and documentation of the rock art began in the 20th century; the area’s paintings and engravings are evidence of human occupation and environmental change from the Neolithic through later historic periods. The UNESCO designation was awarded in 1982 in recognition of the site’s outstanding prehistoric art and geological formations.
The park sits in the central Sahara of southeastern Algeria, north of the town of Djanet, and covers a vast area of remote desert plateau and canyons. Access to the art galleries is by 4x4 and on foot from regional settlements; many panels are in isolated gorges away from main roads.
- UNESCO inscription: Recognised by UNESCO in 1982 for the combined natural and cultural value of its prehistoric rock art and sandstone landforms.
- Rock art: Home to more than 15,000 identified rock paintings and engravings created from the Neolithic period through later historic times.
- Visiting: Best visited in the cooler months to avoid extreme Saharan heat; guided visits are usually necessary because sites are remote and fragile.
