Stara trta (the Old Vine) is a single, historically significant grapevine trained on the facade of a house in Maribor’s old town. It is famous for its exceptional age and continued annual fruiting.

The vine produces grapes used for ceremonial and limited production purposes and is a local cultural symbol tied to Maribor’s wine heritage. Protective measures and a small exhibit nearby interpret the vine’s history and biological significance.

The vine’s age is commonly cited as over four centuries, and it has been listed in international records for its longevity.

Located on a house in the historic centre of Maribor, the vine sits adjacent to the main pedestrian streets and close to the city’s cathedral and public squares.

• Age and recognition: Estimated at over 400 years old and cultivated on the facade of a Maribor house, it is recognized internationally as one of the world’s oldest productive grapevines.

Stara trta (the Old Vine) is located in Maribor’s old town (the Lent district) on the Drava riverbank near the main square. It’s in the city centre and a short walk from Maribor’s main train and bus stations (about 10-15 minutes on foot). Driving from elsewhere in Maribor is straightforward - follow signs to the Lent/old town.

• Visit the Old Vine first thing in the morning or at dusk for the best light and fewer people around the small fenced vine on Lent by the Drava river.
• Pair the vine visit with the Old Vine House (Hiša stare trte) next door - the small museum/wine tasting displays and explains the vine's history that many passersby miss.
• Don't expect to get right up to the vine unrestricted; the vine is protected and photographed best from the pavement and nearby vantage points along the riverside.
