How to Get to Ptuj#
Ptuj is most easily reached via Maribor (short rail/bus hop) or by road from Ljubljana or Graz. Regional trains and intercity buses both serve Ptuj, and the town is compact enough for easy transfers on arrival.
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU): Ljubljana is the main airport for reaching Ptuj. From LJU to Ptuj is roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive; direct shuttle or private transfers generally range €20-40.
Graz Airport (GRZ): Graz in Austria is relatively close to Ptuj (≈1-1.5 hours by car). Cross‑border transfers and rental cars from Graz are commonly used by visitors arriving from Austria; shuttle fares vary by operator.
Train: Ptuj has a local railway station on the Maribor-Ormož line. Trains from Maribor to Ptuj are short (about 15-25 minutes) and inexpensive (a few euros); from Ljubljana you typically travel via Maribor, making total journey time around 1.5-2.5 hours depending on connections.
Bus: Intercity buses from Ljubljana, Maribor and other regional centres serve Ptuj; bus travel times and frequency are good and fares are generally in the €5-15 range for longer legs.
How to Get Around Ptuj#
Ptuj is well served by regional trains from Maribor and by intercity buses from Ljubljana and surrounding towns. For full flexibility in the region, a hire car helps, but the town itself is easily walked.
- Regional train (€1.5-6) - Ptuj station is on the Maribor-Ormož line with quick services to Maribor (≈15-25 minutes). Use the train for easy regional transfers; tickets are inexpensive and schedules are frequent on mainline segments.
- Intercity buses (€5-15) - Buses to and from Ljubljana, Maribor and nearby towns are frequent and often direct. Buses can be more convenient than changing trains for some routes - check timetables for the best connections.
- Car hire (€30+/day) - Renting a car is convenient for exploring the Drava valley and nearby wine regions. Roads are straightforward and parking in Ptuj’s centre is generally available.
- Taxi & local transfers (€10-40 (typical short/intercity trips)) - Taxis and local private transfers are useful for door‑to‑door service or early/late connections and for groups with luggage. Agree the fare in advance for intercity trips.
- Bicycle (€6-12/day) - Ptuj is fairly flat and bike‑friendly; bike rentals and cycling routes in the surrounding countryside are good for short explorations. Cycling is a pleasant way to visit nearby vineyards and riverbanks.
- Walking - Ptuj’s historic centre is compact and best explored on foot; most sights are within a short walk of the main square and riverfront.
