Basseterre & Southeast Coast (Frigate Bay, Basseterre, Cockleshell Bay)

By May the chance of afternoon thunderstorms has increased and the island begins its wetter season; the southeast coast still enjoys many dry, hot mornings ideal for island drives. Snorkeling can be more hit-or-miss because brief run-off from storms stirs the water, so check conditions before heading out. The trades keep humidity bearable, but pack swimwear and a light poncho - tours to Rum Distillery and historic walks go on in between showers.

Northwest & Leeward Coast (Sandy Point, Romney Manor, Brimstone Hill approaches)

The wet season asserts itself more clearly now; afternoons often produce heavy but short-lived thunderstorms that can leave roads temporarily washed out. Romney Manor and nearby plantations flourish and become greener, but trekking on clay tracks becomes slippery. If you want quieter beaches don’t expect deserted shores - resorts remain active and boat operators will favor morning departures.

Mount Liamuiga & Central Highlands (Rainforest, hiking trails)

By May the slopes are lush and the cloud forest is at its greenest, with frequent short, heavy showers that rejuvenate streams and falls. Hikers should expect muddy sections and faster-flowing streams; insect repellent helps against the extra mosquitoes. The cooler temperatures aloft make long hikes more tolerable than at sea level, but check weather in advance as storms can close access.

Nevis (Charlestown, Pinney’s Beach, Nevis Peak, Bath Village)

Humidity increases by late spring and brief heavy showers become more common, though they usually pass quickly and leave the landscape greener. Pinney’s Beach is still pleasant in the morning, but snorkeling visibility can drop after a downpour; plan water activities for early-day windows. Bring light rain gear and pack shoes suitable for both sand and muddy footpaths around plantation sites.
