The Churchill War Rooms are a preserved underground wartime headquarters beneath Whitehall in central London, now operated as a museum by the Imperial War Museums and focused on Britain’s World War II leadership.

Built in the late 1930s as a secure, underground government command centre, the rooms were used by the British cabinet and Winston Churchill throughout the Second World War. The complex was later preserved and opened to the public as a museum and was augmented with the Churchill Museum in the early 21st century.

The War Rooms lie under Whitehall close to 10 Downing Street and a short walk from Westminster Underground station in central London.

What to See#

• Map Room: The preserved wartime Map Room where staff tracked military operations during World War II, maintained in near-original condition.
• Cabinet War Rooms: A suite of Cabinet War Rooms including meeting rooms and offices used by the British government during the 1939-1945 period.
• Churchill Museum: An adjoining interpretive Churchill Museum with multimedia displays covering Winston Churchill’s life and wartime leadership, added later to the complex.

The Churchill War Rooms are a short walk from Westminster and St. James’s Park Underground stations. Take the Circle, District or Jubilee line to Westminster or the Circle/District line to St. James’s Park and walk roughly 5-10 minutes along Great George Street/King Charles Street to the museum.

By rail or coach: from Waterloo you can take the Jubilee line one stop to Westminster. Numerous central London bus routes also serve the Westminster area; walking from the tube is usually quickest.

• Buy a timed-entry ticket in advance and aim for the very first entry or late afternoon to avoid the midday tour groups that fill the narrow corridors of the War Rooms.
• Plan 1.5-2 hours and take the museum's audio guide or interpretation panels slowly-many visitors rush past the Cabinet War Rooms and Map Room details that reward a slower pace.
• Combine your visit with nearby Westminster sites and arrive/leave via the side streets (rather than the main Trafalgar/Whitehall crowds) to avoid the densest tourist flows at peak times.
