St. George’s Island is one of the northeastern islands of Bermuda, in St. George’s Parish, and contains the historic town of St. George-one of the earliest English settlements in the Americas (founded 1612).

The island’s main attractions are its well-preserved colonial streets, timber houses and small museums in the town, together with nearby coastal forts and batteries that speak to Bermuda’s strategic maritime role. Visitors commonly explore the Old Town, walk waterfront streets, and visit fortifications and interpretive sites.

English settlement began on the island in the early 17th century and St. George’s served as Bermuda’s principal settlement and administrative centre for centuries before development shifted to Hamilton in the early 19th century. Fortifications were built and updated over successive centuries to protect the harbour and town.

Geographically the island sits at the northeastern end of Bermuda, connected to neighbouring islets by bridges and causeways and accessible by road from other parts of the archipelago as well as by boat services from Hamilton and other harbours.

  • Early English settlement: Contains one of the earliest English settlements in the Americas, with the town founded in 1612.
  • UNESCO World Heritage: Part of Bermuda's parish of St. George and included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Old Town and related fortifications.
