Sørvágsvatn
Lake Large Faroese lake appearing to hover above the ocean
On Vágar, Sørvágsvatn is the Faroe Islands’ largest lake; a short hike to Trælanípa creates a forced‑perspective photo where the lake appears above the ocean-popular with hikers and photographers.
Sørvágsvatn (also called Leitisvatn) is a freshwater lake on the island of Vágar in the Faroe Islands and is the archipelago’s largest natural lake.
The lake and its surrounding farmland have been used by local communities for grazing and freshwater supply for centuries; the modern popularity of the viewpoint grew with tourism in recent decades. Place names and local routes reflect long-standing Faroese rural use rather than a single founding event.
Sørvágsvatn lies on western Vágar, between the villages of Sørvágur and Bøur, within walking distance of coastal cliffs that drop to the Atlantic. The lake is reached by road from the island’s main settlement and lies roughly a short drive from Vágar Airport.
- Largest lake: Also known locally as Leitisvatn and is the largest natural lake in the Faroe Islands.
- Viewing point: The best-known viewpoint is the cliff at Trælanípa, reached by a marked walking path from the road; light and weather create the famous optical illusion.
What to See #
- Trælanípa (viewpoint): A sheer cliff and viewpoint on the lake's western edge where a short marked trail leads to views of the lake seeming to sit above the ocean - the site most visitors photograph.
- Bøur: Small village on Vágar that serves as a common starting point for walks to the lake and nearby viewpoints; offers parking and local services.
How to Get to Sørvágsvatn #
Sørvágsvatn is on Vágar island in the Faroe Islands. The usual access is from the village of Sørvágur; a parking area and trailhead lead to the shore and viewpoints. Vágar is served by Vágar Airport; from the airport or Sørvágur the hike to the viewpoint is typically 30-60 minutes depending on route and fitness.
Tips for Visiting Sørvágsvatn #
- Walk the short path to the lakeshore and compare the optical illusion from multiple vantage points - the best illusion shifts with your distance and angle.
- Bring waterproof footwear if exploring the shoreline; the boggy ground near the waterline can be muddy after rain.
- Check wind forecasts before attempting long hikes nearby: this part of the Faroes gets sudden weather changes that make cliff walking risky.
Best Time to Visit Sørvágsvatn #
Best in late spring and summer for accessibility and longer daylight, but the optical illusion is visible year-round if weather permits.
