Southwest Coast & Lowlands (Colombo, Galle, Bentota)

May sees the southwest monsoon start to push in-rain becomes frequent in the afternoons in Colombo and Galle, and the sea roughens. Many small coastal excursions are curtailed, but waterfalls and riverine landscapes inland come alive; bring a waterproof daypack and prepare for slippery paths. Hotel rates dip outside the main holiday windows, so it’s a good time for lower prices if you don’t mind wet weather.

Central Highlands (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Horton Plains)

May is when the southwest monsoon begins to strike the highlands-persistent rain, cloud banks and reduced visibility are common in Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains. Landslips are uncommon but trails become very muddy and many hikers switch to shorter walks; waterfalls are technically impressive but sometimes inaccessible. Accommodation prices often drop outside peak windows; bring a reliable rainproof jacket and plan flexible itineraries.

North Central & Cultural Triangle (Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Minneriya)

May sees the onset of the southwest monsoon to the southwest of the island but the Cultural Triangle typically remains relatively dry; heat and dust persist while the landscape begins to show green in places. Minneriya’s tank recedes in pockets, concentrating wildlife around remaining waterholes-good for safaris. Pack light, breathable clothing and a brimmed hat; expect warm nights and a tendency for late‑afternoon mosquitoes.

East Coast & Trincomalee / Arugam Bay (Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Arugam Bay)

May opens the east coast’s main dry season-Trincomalee’s bays are calm, visibility for scuba is excellent, and Arugam Bay’s surf breaks begin to pick up for strong riders. This is peak time for underwater activities and beach lounging; book dives and surf lessons in advance. Expect lively beachside restaurants and good conditions for boat safaris to nearby islands.

Northern Peninsula (Jaffna, Mannar, Delft Island)

May sees the onset of seasonal sea‑breezes and the northern peninsula remains predominantly dry as the southwest monsoon mainly affects the island’s south. The shallow waters around Mannar attract migrant birds as water sources shift elsewhere, making it a good month for birdwatchers. Expect simple services in smaller towns; bring a hat and light hydration gear.
