Southwest Coast & Lowlands (Colombo, Galle, Bentota)

March is when the heat builds-afternoons feel sticky in Negombo and Galle, but mornings are still excellent for walking the Dutch forts. Pre‑monsoon thunderstorms begin to appear late in the month, producing heavy but short downpours that can flood low-lying streets in Colombo. Whale watching still runs through this month; bring a lightweight rain shell for sudden showers.

Central Highlands (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Horton Plains)

March brings a perceptible increase in humidity and more frequent cloud buildups; by late month short, sharp showers appear on Horton Plains and the Ella Rock trail can get slippery. Cloud cover softens the views of tea plantations and waterfalls start to pick up after the dry spell. Travelers should have waterproof footwear and expect intermittent mist that makes the highlands feel atmospheric rather than sunny.

North Central & Cultural Triangle (Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Minneriya)

March brings rising heat and the first hints of humidity; daytime highs make midday sightseeing tiring, and drinking regularly becomes essential. Pools at resorts feel irresistible and evenings are the right time for relaxed visits to quiet archaeological sites. Expect fewer crowds than in January-February, but plan early starts to beat the heat and carry refillable water bottles.

East Coast & Trincomalee / Arugam Bay (Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Arugam Bay)

March starts to improve-sea swells drop and visibility returns for diving at Pigeon Island near Trincomalee; water temperatures are warm and sightings of reef fish become reliable. Arugam Bay begins gearing up for the surf season, and accommodation starts filling slowly. Bring reef shoes for rocky entry points and plan early‑morning dives or surf sessions to avoid wind chop later in the day.

Northern Peninsula (Jaffna, Mannar, Delft Island)

March brings a marked rise in heat across the peninsula; days feel very hot and the sun is strong on Mannar’s flat landscapes. Winds off the Palk Bay can provide occasional relief, so coastal drives are pleasant in the late afternoon. Expect quieter roads and low tourist numbers; carry ample water and avoid extended midday exposure when exploring ruins or islands.
