Spermonde Archipelago
Islands Island chain off Sulawesi with coral reefs
A chain of coral islands off South Sulawesi, accessed from Makassar; tourists arrive for snorkeling and scuba on coral reefs, village boat trips and fresh seafood in island communities.
The Spermonde Archipelago is a scattered group of coral islands, islets and reefs off the southwest coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, near the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi. The archipelago is composed of numerous low-lying islands and submerged reefs that form a maritime zone important for fisheries and local livelihoods.
Key features are shallow coral reefs, seagrass meadows and numerous small islands used for fishing villages, day tourism and marine activities. Many islands are accessible only by boat and are popular for snorkeling, diving and short boat trips from Makassar.
Settlement patterns in the archipelago range from uninhabited islets to small fishing communities living on wooden houses and relying on reef and pelagic fisheries. Over time the area has remained primarily marine-focused, with limited permanent development on most islands.
Geographically the archipelago lies off the southwestern shoreline of Sulawesi in the Java and Flores Sea region, with the city of Makassar serving as the main regional hub for transport and boat services to the islands.
