Northern Mainland (Northern Vietnam, Northern Laos, Northern Thailand, northern Myanmar)
Clear skies and a sharp coolness at elevation define much of February, with Sapa’s terraces and Luang Prabang’s riverside strolls luminous in the dry air. Daytime temperatures creep higher than January but mornings can still be chilly; this is peak season for mountain homestays and hill tribe markets. Expect crowds in popular northern Thai spots like Chiang Mai; a light down jacket and sun protection are both useful on the same day.
Central & Southern Mainland (Central & Southern Vietnam, Cambodia, central & southern Thailand, southern Laos, lower Myanmar)
January continues with dry weather and moderate temperatures across lower-elevation cities and coasts, with bright mornings and calm seas in many resort areas on Thailand’s west coast and central Vietnam. This is a popular month for beach travel and island hopping; sea conditions are generally settled though occasional swell can reach exposed shores. Pack light layers for evenings and sunscreen for strong daytime sun.
Northern Highlands & Tonkin (Hanoi region, Sapa, northern Laos highlands, Chiang Rai area)
Frost remains possible at altitude in February and mornings can feel alpine rather than tropical; daytime temperatures moderate to comfortable for trekking. The clear, dry air enhances visibility from ridge-lines and homestays in regions such as Ha Giang and the Shan hills show their terraces in sharp relief. Expect smaller crowds than lowland New Year travel, so remote guesthouses are easier to reserve but should still be booked in advance.
Malay Peninsula & Singapore (Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore)
February is often drier and is commonly considered one of the best months to visit Singapore and the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia for settled conditions and clearer skies. Beach resorts on the peninsula’s west side and urban attractions across Kuala Lumpur and George Town receive more predictable weather. Book early for limited island availability as visitors take advantage of the more stable sea conditions.
Borneo & East Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Indonesian Kalimantan)
February often continues wet conditions in parts of Borneo, though pockets of drier weather allow for productive Sabah rainforest treks and sightings around Kinabalu foothills. East-coast Sabah can still be very wet; plan flexible inland journeys and expect mud and leeches in certain national parks. Pack robust rain protection and a good pair of gaiters if you intend to hike in primary forest.
Maritime Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi)
February remains squarely in the wet season for most of western and central Indonesia; heavy rain showers and storms are likely on any given day, especially in Sumatra and western Java. Bali and Lombok see frequent showers that fill streams but may still offer sunny breaks between storms. Travellers should be flexible with island-hopping plans and watch for river crossings that may close temporarily.
The Philippines & Timor-Leste
February continues dry and comfortable across most of the Philippines and Timor-Leste, with low rainfall improving road travel and sea crossings. Visayas festivals and outdoor diving thrive in this window; visibility underwater is often excellent. Pack lightweight layers for coastal evenings and a small waterproof for unpredictable squalls on tropical afternoons.
