Solnitsata Archaeological Site

Solnitsata is an archaeological site and prehistoric settlement near the modern town of Provadiya in Varna Province, northeastern Bulgaria, associated with early salt production. It is recognised for remains dating to the late Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, when salt extraction supported settled communities.

Excavated features include defensive structures and domestic remains that illustrate a permanently occupied, fortified settlement whose economy centred on salt. Visitors interested in archaeology go to view the exposed remains at the site and to see related artifacts and interpretation in local museum displays.

Archaeological investigations have shown that the site developed during prehistory as a centre for salt production and trade, leading to construction of fortifications and substantial occupation layers. Solnitsata (the prehistoric salt town) lies just outside the town of Provadia in Varna Province, roughly 50-60 km west of Varna by road. Drive from Varna toward Provadia (about 45-60 minutes) and follow local signs to the archaeological site; alternatively take a regional bus to Provadia and complete the short onward journey by taxi or local transfer to the site.

• Visit in the cooler morning hours to climb the mound and walk the ramparts comfortably-early light also gives the best panoramic views over the surrounding plain.
• Combine the hill visit with the nearby archaeological displays in Provadia (museum/exhibit panels at the reserve) to understand Solnitsata's salt-production context; many visitors miss the interpretive panels at the site itself.
