Why Visit Nesebar?#

Perched on a rocky peninsula, Nesebar is prized for its compact Old Town of wooden houses and Byzantine churches, a UNESCO reminder of layered history. Sun-warmed seafood and shopska salad are local musts after wandering cobbled lanes and the Church of St. Sophia; seaside promenades add a coastal mood. Visitors come for the blend of archaeological ruins, Ottoman-era charm and lively summer atmosphere without the scale of bigger Black Sea resorts.

How to Get to Nesebar#

Nesebar (the old town peninsula) is most conveniently reached via Burgas Airport (BOJ) and Burgas bus/rail hub. From Burgas, short, frequent buses and taxis run to Nesebar; in high season extra shuttles and transfers are widely available.

By Air

Burgas Airport (BOJ): Burgas is the closest airport for Nesebar (about 30 km). From Burgas Airport there are seasonal shuttle coaches and regular airport taxis to Nesebar and nearby Sunny Beach; shuttle/minibus fares are typically €4-€10 and take about 25-40 minutes. A taxi from the airport directly to Nesebar costs roughly 25-40 BGN (€12-€20) and takes 20-30 minutes.

Varna Airport (VAR): Varna is further (about 100 km) but can be useful outside high season or for different flight options. From Varna you can take a direct coach or rent a car; coach transfers take about 1.5-2 hours and shuttle fares vary (often €10-20).

By Train & Bus

Train: Nesebar has no mainline railway station; the nearest railhead is Burgas railway station. Trains to Burgas arrive from Sofia and coastal towns-from there you transfer by bus or taxi to Nesebar (train fares vary by origin).

Bus: Regular buses and minibuses run from Burgas Bus Station (Autogara) to Nesebar and the peninsula; journey time is around 20-30 minutes and single fares are usually in the 3-6 BGN range (≈€1.50-€3). During summer there are more frequent direct buses from Burgas Airport and from Sunny Beach.

How to Get Around Nesebar#

Nesebar is normally reached from Burgas (airport and bus/rail hub) with short, inexpensive bus or taxi transfers. In summer there are extra shuttle and boat options, but within the Old Town you’ll be on foot.

  • Regional bus / Minibus (3-6 BGN) - The most common way to reach and move around Nesebar is by regional bus and minibus from Burgas and Sunny Beach. Buses run frequently in summer and less often off-season. They’re cheap, drop you near the Old Town, and take about 20-30 minutes from Burgas.
  • Taxi / Transfer (25-40 BGN) - Taxis from Burgas Airport or Burgas city to Nesebar are fast and widely available; expect ~20-30 minutes and roughly 25-40 BGN depending on time and luggage. Private transfers can be pre-booked in high season for convenience.
  • Car hire (€30-€70/day (typical)) - Renting a car from Burgas or Varna gives flexibility to explore the coast and inland. Driving distances are short but parking in Nesebar Old Town can be limited-most visitors park on the mainland and walk across the causeway.
  • Boat / Sea taxi (€5-€20 (typical trips)) - In summer there are occasional boat tours and sea taxis serving the coast and nearby resorts; these are tourist services rather than regular public transport. Useful for sightseeing and short coastal hops-prices vary by operator and route.
  • Walking - Nesebar’s Old Town is compact and pedestrian-only in many parts; expect to walk on cobbled streets and short climbs. Walking is the only practical way to explore the historic peninsula properly.
