How to Get to Skopje
Skopje is served primarily through Skopje International Airport (SKP) and by a central railway and bus station in the city centre. Most visitors arrive at SKP, but some use Thessaloniki (Greece) or Pristina (Kosovo) and continue by bus for competitive fares.
Skopje International Airport (SKP): Skopje’s main airport is Skopje International Airport (SKP), about 17 km north-east of the centre. The airport is served by a regular airport shuttle bus (line 60) to Skopje Bus Station and the city centre - tickets are commonly sold on the bus for about 150 MKD (≈€2.5); journey time is roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis from the airport to central Skopje normally take 25-35 minutes and cost in the ~700-1,200 MKD range (≈€11-20), and car rentals are available at the terminal.
Thessaloniki (SKG) / Pristina (PRN) as alternatives: If you can’t find a convenient flight to SKP, Thessaloniki (SKG) and Pristina (PRN) are used as alternatives. Thessaloniki Airport to Skopje by direct intercity bus takes about 3.5-4 hours and fares are typically €15-25. Pristina Airport to Skopje by bus or minibus is around 1.5-2 hours and usually costs about €5-12 depending on operator and border-crossing times.
Train: Skopje Railway Station (Железничка станица Скопје) handles domestic and some international services operated by Makedonski Železnici. Train services in North Macedonia can be infrequent and slower than buses; short regional journeys are inexpensive (often from about 100-300 MKD) but travel times are longer-check the Makedonski Železnici timetable before travelling.
Bus: The main hub for coaches is Skopje Bus Station (Автобуска станица Скопје) near the city centre. Buses are the most frequent option for domestic routes (Skopje-Ohrid ≈3.5-4 hours, fares commonly ~300-400 MKD; Skopje-Bitola ≈2.5-3 hours) and for international lines (to Belgrade, Sofia, Thessaloniki - typically €12-25 depending on route). Journey times and prices vary by operator; buy tickets at the station or from reputable companies online.
How to Get Around Skopje
Skopje is easiest to navigate by a combination of city buses and walking in the centre; buses cover suburbs and are cheap. For intercity travel, coaches are usually faster and more frequent than trains; taxis are handy for short hops or airport transfers.
- City buses (30-60 MKD) - Skopje's city bus network connects suburbs and central areas and is the most reliable low-cost option for getting around. Tickets are cheap and usually bought on-board or at kiosks (carry cash and small change). Buses can be crowded at peak times; routes radiate from the central bus hub so expect transfers for some journeys.
- Intercity buses (from ~120 MKD (short) to 400+ MKD (longer)) - Intercity coaches depart from Skopje Bus Station and are usually faster and more frequent than trains for most domestic and regional routes. Coaches to Ohrid, Bitola, Tetovo and international destinations run several times daily; standard coaches are comfortable and allow luggage stowage. Book ahead for popular holiday dates.
- Train (from ~100 MKD) - Rail services operate from Skopje Railway Station under Makedonski Železnici. Trains can be useful for scenic regional trips but are generally slower and less frequent than buses; timetables change seasonally. If you prefer rail travel, check schedules in advance and allow extra time for connections.
- Taxi (300-1,200 MKD) - Taxis are plentiful and a convenient choice for short trips, late nights or when carrying luggage. Agree a fare or insist the driver uses the meter; airport transfers typically cost more (see Getting There). Use licensed vehicles and ask for an estimated price for longer journeys.
- Car rental (€25-50/day) - Renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring around Skopje and rural North Macedonia. Roads are generally in good condition on major routes, but drive carefully on mountain roads and watch for variable signage. Rental rates vary by season-book in advance for the best deals and ensure your insurance covers border crossings if you plan to visit neighbouring countries.
- Walking - Skopje's compact centre - including the Old Bazaar, Macedonia Square and the riverfront - is very walkable and often the quickest way to move between sights. Pavements are mostly good in the central districts, though stone surfaces can be uneven in historic areas. Walking is the best way to soak up the city's atmosphere and discover side streets.
