How to Get to Štip#
Štip is well connected by road and rail to Skopje and regional centres; buses are usually more frequent while trains offer a cheaper but slower alternative. The town is compact and easy to navigate on foot or by short taxi rides.
Skopje International (SKP): Skopje is the nearest major airport for reaching Štip; from Skopje you can take a bus or taxi to Štip. The road journey is around 1.5-2.5 hours by coach depending on route and traffic; fares are typically a few hundred MKD.
Ohrid/Bitola (regional): There are no major airports near Štip with regular international service - arrivals are usually routed via Skopje (SKP) and then onward by road.
Train: Štip does have a railway station (Štip railway station) served by Macedonian Railways on routes connecting to Veles and further to Skopje and the south. Trains are available but can be slower and less frequent than buses; expect low fares and journey times to Skopje of around 2-3 hours depending on service.
Bus: Štip’s central bus station offers frequent coach connections to Skopje, Kumanovo, and other regional towns. Buses are typically faster and run more often than trains; fares are inexpensive and timetables are posted at the station.
How to Get Around Štip#
Use buses for fastest, most frequent connections; trains are an economical alternative. Within Štip the centre is walkable and taxis handle shorter or off-schedule trips.
- Train (100-400 MKD) - Štip railway station is on North Macedonia’s domestic network with services to Veles and Skopje. Trains are inexpensive but slower and less frequent than buses-useful if you prefer a relaxed journey and cheap fares.
- Intercity bus (200-600 MKD) - Buses from Štip run regularly to Skopje, Kumanovo and southern towns. Coaches are frequent, comfortable and typically faster than trains for most routes; buy tickets at the bus station.
- Taxi (200-1,500 MKD) - Taxis are plentiful for short trips inside Štip or for connections to nearby villages. For longer intercity transfers ask for a fixed price or ensure the meter is used.
- Car rental (€30-€60/day) - Hiring a car makes exploring the surrounding plains and archaeological sites easier. Roads are generally good and parking is available in town.
- Walking - Štip’s centre is compact and most shops, markets and museums are within easy walking distance. Pavements are generally passable but can be uneven in places.
