Skopje’s Old Bazaar is a historic Ottoman-era market district located on the right bank of the Vardar River next to the Stone Bridge. It is one of the largest and best-preserved bazaars in the Balkans, with a maze of streets, workshops, mosques and inns.

The area contains covered markets, hans, hammams and several notable mosques and religious complexes; it is a centre for craft shops, cafes and cultural institutions within the city. The district functions as both a tourist destination and an active local commercial quarter.

The Old Bazaar developed under Ottoman administration from the late medieval period and expanded through the 15th to 17th centuries. It suffered major damage in the 1963 earthquake but many historic structures were subsequently repaired and adapted for new uses.

Geographically it sits in central Skopje between the Stone Bridge and Kale (Skopje Fortress), directly adjacent to the Vardar and within walking distance of the modern city centre.

• Historical importance: Was the commercial and social heart of Skopje during Ottoman rule and remains a dense cluster of historic buildings next to the Stone Bridge.
• Post-earthquake restoration: Many buildings were damaged in the 1963 earthquake and have since been restored or adapted for museums, galleries and shops.

Skopje’s Old Bazaar is in the heart of the city beside the Vardar river, immediately adjacent to the Stone Bridge and Macedonia Square. It’s within easy walking distance from central Skopje; the area is also served by the city’s bus network and by taxis.

• Explore the side streets of the Old Bazaar in the morning on a weekday to see artisanal workshops and small traditional shops before later crowds swell; many visitors stick to the main thoroughfares and miss tucked-away stalls.
• Enter on foot from the Stone Bridge or from Macedonia Square and follow signs toward the mosques and caravanserai - the Ottoman-era architecture and small historic mosques are concentrated off the main pedestrian routes.
• Stop at one of the small cafes on upper floors or rooftop terraces for a view over the bazaar and river; these vantage points are often overlooked but give a great sense of the district's layout.
