Shrine of Venus Cloacina Temple

The Shrine of Venus Cloacina is a small ancient Roman shrine associated with the cult of Venus in her aspect as Cloacina, guardian of the Cloaca Maxima. It is part of the religious and civic fabric of the Roman Forum.

The surviving remains consist of foundations and partial masonry that mark the shrine’s former footprint; they are interpreted by archaeologists as belonging to a modest, circular or aedicula structure. The site is primarily of archaeological and historical interest rather than a functioning place of worship.

The shrine was linked in Roman tradition to purification and to the great sewer system of Rome, the Cloaca Maxima, and it appears in Roman literary and epigraphic sources in that context. Its form and placement reflect civic religion practised in the Forum area.

The shrine sits within the Roman Forum in central Rome, close to major ancient monuments and ruins. It is accessible as part of the Forum archaeological area and is visited in conjunction with surrounding Roman remains.

The Forum area is also within comfortable walking distance from many central Rome bus stops and from the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia.
