Sao Din Escarpment
Sao Din at a Glance#
Exploring Sao Din#
Sao Din means ‘earth pillars’, a fitting name for a soil that has eroded into weird shapes, a little like the termite mounds of parts of Australia. The formations are similar to those of Phae Muang Phi in Phrae Province but cover a larger area. They were caused by movement of the earth’s crust, probably between 10,000 and 30,000 years ago, in a place that was once at the bottom of the sea.
Two sites. Sao Din lies in Na Noi district, around 60 kilometres south of Nan, and is really two sites: Sao Din Hom Chom, off Route 1216 west of Na Noi, and Sao Din Na Noi, south of the village off Route 1026.
Visiting. Though part of Si Nan National Park, there are no facilities beyond a small visitor centre with a few fading photos. It is great fun to explore this strange landscape, and children in particular love the possibilities for hide-and-seek, but bring refreshments along with you.
