Sandy Bay City
Island village in Honduras' Bay Islands
A reef-side stretch on Roatán, Sandy Bay draws divers to coral gardens, wall drops and lively dive shops; beach bars pour rum, and local fishermen sell ceviche. It’s about clear water, PADI courses and sunset walks along palm-fringed sand.
Why Visit Sandy Bay?#
Set on Roatán’s southern shore, Sandy Bay draws travelers who want reef diving, lazy beach days and a relaxed island pace. The nearby Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and West Bay Beach make it a magnet for snorkelers and scuba divers, while Garifuna drumming nights and fresh lobster or baleadas ground the experience in local culture and cuisine. Small guesthouses and beachfront bars keep things friendly; visitors come for underwater life and a taste of island traditions.

How to Get to Sandy Bay#
Sandy Bay is on Roatán in Honduras’ Bay Islands; most visitors arrive by air into Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) on Roatán or by ferry from La Ceiba on the Honduran mainland. Domestic flights from San Pedro Sula (SAP) and ferries from La Ceiba connect to Roatán, and local taxis or hotel shuttles handle the last mile to Sandy Bay.
Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB): The main airport serving Roatán island, where Sandy Bay is located. From RTB you can take a taxi to Sandy Bay (about 20-30 minutes) for roughly HNL 200-350 (≈USD 8-15) or arrange a prepaid shuttle from many hotels for a similar price and time.
Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) / Golosón International Airport (LCE): If you arrive on the Honduran mainland at SAP (San Pedro Sula) or LCE (La Ceiba), you can connect to Roatán by a short domestic flight to RTB (30-45 minutes) - fares and schedules vary by carrier; alternatively, travel overland to La Ceiba and take a ferry to Roatán (see By Train & Bus).
Train / Overland: There is no direct long‑distance rail link to the Bay Islands; overland travel on the Honduran mainland uses buses or private transfers to reach coastal ports such as La Ceiba.
Bus / Ferry: From La Ceiba’s port you can catch a passenger ferry to Roatán (journey commonly 1.5-3 hours depending on service). Ferry prices are typically in the USD 15-40 range one way. From Roatán’s port or RTB airport, local taxis or shuttles take you to Sandy Bay in around 20-40 minutes (see By Air for taxi estimates).
How to Get Around Sandy Bay#
Roatán is easiest to navigate by taxi or rental car for flexibility; local buses are very cheap but informal. For short in-village trips, walking works well, while hotel shuttles and prebooked transfers remove uncertainty for airport/ferry arrivals.
- Taxi / Shuttle (HNL 200-350 (≈USD 8-15)) - Taxis and hotel shuttles are the most convenient way to reach Sandy Bay from RTB or Roatán’s ferry terminals. Expect about HNL 200-350 (≈USD 8-15) and 20-40 minutes depending on traffic and exact drop‑off. Agree the fare before you board or use a hotel-arranged transfer to avoid confusion.
- Local buses / Colectivos (a few HNL) - Local minibuses (‘colectivos’) run between Coxen Hole, West End and other Roatán communities; they are the cheapest option but can be infrequent and crowded. Fares are low (a few lempiras) but services are informal, so allow extra time and ask locals about stops for Sandy Bay.
- Car rental (varies) - Car hire is available on Roatán and gives the most freedom to explore the island’s beaches and viewpoints. Daily rates vary seasonally; roads are narrow and driving is on the right. Park and drive cautiously - some attractions have limited or no secure parking.
- Taxi boat / Water taxi (varies) - For some parts of Roatán a water taxi is an option (to/from West End/West Bay areas) and can be quicker than winding roads. Prices vary by operator and distance - confirm the fare in advance. Not typically used for Sandy Bay but useful to know for nearby coastal transfers.
- Walking - Sandy Bay is small and walkable for short trips, beach access and local restaurants. Walking is the best way to explore the immediate area but not practical for longer island transfers or airport/ferry trips.
