How to Get to Sambava

Sambava on Madagascar's northeast coast is most practically reached via a domestic flight to Sambava / Antsirabato Airport (SVB) from Antananarivo. Overland routes exist but are lengthy and dependent on road quality; local travel relies on minibuses, taxis and boats.

By Air

Sambava / Antsirabato Airport (SVB): Sambava has a small regional airport (SVB) with domestic flights, primarily to and from Antananarivo. From the airport the town and beaches are a short drive.

Antananarivo Ivato Airport (TNR): The main international gateway is Antananarivo; most international visitors fly into TNR then take a domestic flight to Sambava (SVB) or travel overland, though overland journeys are long.

By Train & Bus

Train: Madagascar has very limited passenger rail service and none that serves Sambava reliably; overland travel is by road.

Bus / Taxi-brousse: Taxi-brousse (shared minibuses) and regional buses link Sambava with other towns on the northeast coast. Road travel can be slow due to road conditions; boats are also used for some coastal connections.

Sambava’s town centre is walkable and compact for short errands. Taxi-brousse services connect Sambava with other towns in the Sava region, while tuk-tuk-style vehicles and moto-taxis operate within town.
