Best Time to Visit Saint-Leu#

Saint-Leu is at its best during the dry, cooler months (May-October) when trade winds keep humidity low and sea conditions are calm. The November-April wet season brings heat and frequent showers, with cyclone risk peaking in early year.

Dry Season

May - October

18°C - 26°C (64°F - 79°F)

Cooler trade winds, less rain and excellent visibility - ideal for beach time, coastal hikes and snorkeling off the west coast.

Wet Season

November - April

22°C - 30°C (72°F - 86°F)

Hotter, humid with frequent tropical showers; lush inland scenery but more mosquitoes and intermittent downpours interrupt plans.

Cyclone Season

January - March

24°C - 30°C (75°F - 86°F)

Highest risk of cyclones and severe storms - avoid if possible; travel and outdoor plans can be seriously disrupted by extreme weather.

Climate

Subtropical climate with hot summers (peaking in January) and warm winters (coldest in July). Temperatures range from 17°C to 29°C. Abundant rainfall (1279 mm/year), wettest in March.

How to Get to Saint-Leu#

Saint-Leu is on Réunion’s west coast and is best reached via Roland Garros (Saint-Denis) or Pierrefonds (Saint-Pierre) airports, followed by car, shuttle or bus. Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the island’s west and south.

By Air

Roland Garros / Saint-Denis (RUN): Réunion’s main international airport is Roland Garros (RUN) near Saint-Denis on the northern part of the island. From Roland Garros you can reach Saint-Leu by car or shuttle - the drive is around 45-70 minutes depending on traffic and route (RN1 via the west coast is common). Taxis and private transfers are available at the airport; fares to Saint-Leu typically range from €60-€100.

Pierrefonds Airport (ZSE): Pierrefonds (near Saint-Pierre) handles some domestic and regional flights; from there to Saint-Leu is a longer drive (about 1-1.5 hours) across the island. Car rental is a popular option at both airports.

By Train & Bus

Train: Réunion has no rail passenger service.

Bus: The island has a public bus network (Car Jaune/Regional buses and private carriers) linking major towns; lines between Saint-Denis, Saint-Pierre and coastal towns pass near Saint-Leu. Bus travel is inexpensive (single fares are low) but slower than driving; check the local schedules (operated by CIVIS/Car Jaune and regional networks).

How to Get Around Saint-Leu#

A rental car or private transfer is the most practical way to reach and explore Saint-Leu; regional buses provide a low-cost alternative but are slower and less frequent. Once there, walking and cycling work well for local sightseeing.

Where to Stay in Saint-Leu#

Budget

Saint-Leu town centre - €25-60/night

Basic guesthouses and small chambres d’hôtes dominate budget stays. Limited low-cost hostels; expect simple rooms, shared facilities, and booking in advance during high season.

Mid-Range

Boulevard de l’Océan / waterfront - €70-140/night

Comfortable gîtes and small hotels near the waterfront offer mid-range comfort. Choices are modest in number-book early for sea-view rooms and weekend dates.

Luxury

Coastal outskirts / nearby Saint-Gilles - €150-350/night

Few high-end properties here; most luxury options are outside town toward Saint-Gilles. Expect resort-style hotels a short drive away rather than inner-town palaces.

Shopping in Saint-Leu#

Local markets and small boutiques sell Réunion specialties such as vanilla, rum products and local crafts; you’ll find day-to-day shops in town rather than big shopping centres. Weekly markets are the best place to pick up regional produce and souvenirs.

Nightlife in Saint-Leu#

Evenings are generally relaxed, with seaside restaurants and small bars hosting most activity. There are no large club districts - nightlife tends toward dining, occasional live music and beachfront gatherings.
