Saint Catherine Monastery
Religious Site Ancient Christian monastery at Mount Sinai
At the foot of Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine Monastery preserves an early Christian library, Byzantine icons and the Chapel of the Burning Bush; pilgrims and hikers use it as a base for Sinai ascents.
Saint Catherine Monastery is a working Greek Orthodox monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, founded in the 6th century by order of Emperor Justinian I. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The complex contains a fortified enclosure, the main basilica (Katholikon), a chapel traditionally marking the Burning Bush, and an important library of manuscripts and icons. Visitors commonly view its Byzantine and later icons, the manuscript collection, and the small chapel associated with the biblical Burning Bush. The monastery also functions as a living religious community with resident monks and daily services.
Built in the mid 6th century under Justinian, the site was intended to protect early Christian worship in the Sinai and to house relics and manuscripts. Over time the complex was expanded and fortified; it retained continuous monastic occupation through Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman periods into modern Egypt.
The monastery lies in the mountainous central Sinai near the town of Saint Catherine, at the foot of Jebel Musa. It sits in South Sinai Governorate on the desert plateau of the peninsula, roughly a few hours by road from the Red Sea resort areas to the south.
- Library collection: Houses one of the world's oldest continuously operating Christian libraries with roughly 3,000 manuscripts and many Byzantine icons.
- Mount Sinai access: Serves as the base for pilgrim and tourist ascents of nearby Jebel Musa (Mount Sinai); sunrise and early morning climbs are the most popular times.
What to See #

- Chapel of the Burning Bush: Small chapel and shrine said to mark the site of the Burning Bush, located within the monastery grounds.
