Mount Catherine (Jebel Katrinah) is the highest mountain in Egypt, with a summit at 2,629 metres, located in the South Sinai Governorate. It sits near the historic St. Catherine’s Monastery, a long-standing Christian pilgrimage site.

Hiking and pilgrimage are the primary draws, with marked routes from the monastery and nearby St. Catherine town. Trails vary from a few hours to full-day ascents to the summit; many visitors time climbs for sunrise. The area also offers scenic desert-mountain vistas and plant communities adapted to high-elevation Sinai.

The mountain has been a pilgrimage and monastic area for centuries, with the monastery at its foot dating to the Byzantine period. The site has seen continuous religious use and later protection as part of a nature and cultural reserve.

Mount Catherine lies in the southern Sinai highlands, a short distance from the town of Saint Catherine and surrounded by rugged desert ranges. The mountain and monastery form the core of the St. Catherine Protectorate, a protected area combining cultural heritage and natural landscapes.

• Summit: The rocky summit is the highest point in Egypt at 2,629 metres and is reached by hiking routes of varying steepness from the monastery and nearby trails.

The usual base is the town of St. Catherine; regular buses and private transfers run from Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab. From the monastery a network of trails and shepherd tracks lead up to the summit-use a local guide for safety and navigation.

• If approaching from Mount Sinai or St. Catherine's, hire a Bedouin guide for the safest route-some trails are steep and poorly signed.
• Start any ascent before first light to avoid midday heat and to witness sunrise views across the Sinai plateau; many pilgrims do this en route to the monastery.
• Wear sturdy boots and layers: temperatures drop rapidly after sunset and the exposed slopes are subject to variable winds.
