Serabit el-Khadim

Serabit el-Khadim is an archaeological complex on the Sinai Peninsula that contains an Egyptian temple precinct and the remains of ancient mining operations focused on turquoise. The site is notable for its combination of ritual architecture and mining archaeology.

The core features are the temple area dedicated to Hathor and the surrounding camps and galleries used in antiquity for turquoise extraction. Visitors also see carved and painted inscriptions and rock art scattered across the plateau that interest epigraphers and historians. The exposed mining galleries and ruined work areas convey the industrial scale of the ancient operations.

Egyptian expeditions exploited the local mineral resources in the Bronze Age and later, building a temple complex and associated facilities to support mining activity. The site has been documented by archaeologists for its artifacts, mining installations and early inscriptions that have informed studies of alphabetic development.

Situated on a high plateau in the southern Sinai, the site lies inland from the Red Sea coast in a sparsely populated area administered today within South Sinai Governorate; its terrain is rocky and arid, and the nearest modern settlements are some distance away.

What to See#

• Temple of Hathor: A temple precinct dedicated to the goddess Hathor that preserves foundation remains and stone blocks from Egyptian ritual use.
• Mining precincts: Extensive mining and settlement remains including exposed mining galleries, smelting areas and workers’ installations related to ancient turquoise extraction.
• Inscriptions and rock art: Rock inscriptions and petroglyphs in and around the site, including examples that influenced studies of early alphabetic scripts.

• Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the Sinai desert heat and to get the best light on rock inscriptions and reliefs.
• Arrange a local 4x4 and guide from nearby towns (St. Catherine is the usual staging point) because the site is remote and a guide will point out the archaeological features you'd easily miss.
• Make time to inspect the rock faces and old mine workings around the temple complex-Proto‑Sinaitic inscriptions and ancient turquoise-mining cuts are easy to overlook from a distance.
