Historical Site Mountain monastery complex including ancient Saint Catherine's Monastery
Saint Catherine’s area at Sinai includes the sixth-century monastery founded on Mount Sinai, Byzantine icons and an ascent to the mountain summit. Pilgrims climb for sunrise, visit the monastery library and cross desert wadis on organised routes.
The Saint Catherine Area in southern Sinai, Egypt, is a high‑mountain cultural landscape that includes a working Byzantine monastery and surrounding sacred peaks. The monastery dates to the 6th century and the area combines religious, architectural and natural significance.
The enclosed monastic complex contains a fortress‑like wall, a Byzantine church and a historic library of manuscripts and icons; the compound is compact and visitor access is controlled. Adjacent to the monastery, Mount Sinai (Jabal Musa) rises to 2,285 metres and is reached by established footpaths used by pilgrims and hikers. The landscape offers rocky desert scenery, short mountain treks and viewpoints over the Sinai highlands.
The monastery was founded in the 6th century during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I and has been continuously occupied by a Christian monastic community since that time. Over centuries it has served as a pilgrimage site and a center for manuscript preservation and religious art, while its fortifications and buildings were modified for protection and monastic needs.
The site sits in the high mountains of the southern Sinai Peninsula, inland from the Gulf of Suez in South Sinai Governorate. It occupies a remote, arid mountain setting widely visited from coastal resort hubs and regional transport links.
- Monastic library: Houses a surviving monastic library with early Christian manuscripts and icons, making it important for religious and manuscript history.
- Summit height: The mountain summit reaches 2,285 metres, and routes from the monastery to the summit are used by pilgrims and trekkers.
