Rusumo Falls

Rusumo Falls is a set of rapids and cataracts on the Kagera River at the border between Rwanda and Tanzania. The falls mark an important natural crossing point and are the site of cross-border infrastructure.

The falls have long been a local crossing and trade point on the Kagera and became more prominent in modern times as a transport and border location. In the 21st century a regional hydropower project was developed at Rusumo to harness the river’s flow for electricity supply to neighbouring countries.

Rusumo sits on the Kagera River at the Rwanda-Tanzania border in the eastern section of the African Great Lakes region. The nearest towns are the border settlements on either side of the river; the falls lie within a tropical riverine landscape.
