About Lake Burigi

Lake Burigi is a freshwater lake in Tanzania’s Kagera Region, in the northwestern part of the country. The lake lies within a protected landscape and is associated with seasonal swamps and floodplain habitat.

The lake supports populations of hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds and is used locally for fishing and small-scale transport. Access is generally by rural roads and tracks rather than major tourist infrastructure.

Lake Burigi is a natural shallow lake that has long been an ecological focus within the region; it forms part of a network of lakes and wetlands in northwestern Tanzania. Protection and management are aligned with regional conservation aims.

Geographically the lake sits in Kagera Region near Tanzania’s border with Uganda in a lowland-to-undulating landscape; it is inland from Lake Victoria and surrounded by mixed woodland and wetland areas.
