How to Get to Ruhengeri
Ruhengeri (commonly called Musanze) is reached almost entirely by road; the nearest international airport is Kigali International Airport (KGL), from which regular road services connect north to Musanze. Most visitors arrive by bus, private transfer, or arranged tour transfers for trips to Volcanoes National Park.
Kigali International Airport (KGL): The main commercial gateway for Ruhengeri (Musanze) is Kigali International Airport, about 90-100 km to the south. From KGL you can take a taxi or prebooked private transfer direct to Musanze (typical taxi/private-transfer fares roughly 30,000-60,000 RWF / ~30-60 USD; journey time 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic).
Note: There is no regular commercial airport serving Ruhengeri itself, so almost all international arrivals use Kigali and continue by road.
Train: Rwanda does not currently operate a passenger rail service, so trains are not an option for reaching Ruhengeri.
Bus: Long-distance buses and minibuses run between Kigali (Nyabugogo Bus Terminal) and Musanze/Ruhengeri Bus Park frequently. Typical one-way fares are around 2,000-4,000 RWF (~2-4 USD) and journey times are normally 2-3 hours depending on service and stops. From Kigali airport you first transfer into the city (taxi or airport shuttle) to catch these services.
How to Get Around Ruhengeri
Ruhengeri (Musanze) is best navigated by road: intercity buses and shared minibuses are the budget option, while private transfers or hire with a driver are more convenient for park access. For moving around town, boda-bodas are fastest and walking works well in the compact centre; hire a vehicle for visits to Volcanoes National Park.
- Intercity bus (2,000-4,000 RWF) - Reliable and budget-friendly: buses and shared minibuses run several times a day between Kigali (Nyabugogo Bus Terminal) and Musanze/Ruhengeri Bus Park. Tickets are cheap, departures are concentrated in the morning and afternoon, and the trip usually takes 2-3 hours. Book a seat for busy periods (holiday and gorilla-trekking season) and confirm the final drop-off - some services stop at the bus park while others drop passengers nearer the town centre.
- Taxi / Private transfer (30,000-60,000 RWF) - Taxis or prebooked private transfers give door-to-door convenience, useful if you have luggage or are arriving late. Expect the drive from Kigali to take about 1.5-2.5 hours; fares depend on vehicle size and negotiation or booking platform. Private transfers are recommended if you have a tight schedule for gorilla permits or a large group.
- Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) (500-2,000 RWF) - Motorcycle taxis are the fastest and most flexible way to move around town and to reach trailheads or accommodation on steep or narrow roads.
