How to Get to Muhanga#

Muhanga (Gitarama) is a short drive southwest of Kigali and is best reached by road from Kigali International Airport (KGL). Regular minibuses and shared taxis connect the two cities; a private taxi is faster and slightly more expensive.

By Air

Kigali International Airport (KGL): The main international gateway to Rwanda. From Kigali to Muhanga (formerly Gitarama) you can take a regular bus or a taxi; the road distance is about 50-70 km and travel time is typically 1-1.5 hours by car. Taxi fares from the airport to Muhanga are roughly 20,000-40,000 RWF depending on vehicle and negotiation.

Kigali domestic connections: Rwanda’s small domestic flight network is limited and Kigali is the practical arrival airport for Muhanga visitors; onward travel is normally by road.

By Train & Bus

Train: Rwanda has no conventional passenger rail service connecting Kigali and Muhanga.

Bus / minibus (matatu / taxi‑bus): Regular long‑distance buses and minibus services (often called ‘cars rapides’ or private coach companies) link Kigali and Muhanga with frequent departures. Journey time ~1-1.5 hours; fares typically range from about 1,000-2,000 RWF depending on the service and comfort level.

Muhanga is best reached by a short road transfer from Kigali-minibuses are the affordable option while taxis and private hires save time. Inside Muhanga, motos, taxis and walking cover local travel needs.

  • Taxi / private transfer (~20,000-40,000 RWF) - Private taxis from Kigali to Muhanga take about 1-1.5 hours and offer door‑to‑door convenience-handy with luggage or on tight schedules. Negotiate a fixed fare before departure or use a reputable airport transfer service.
  • Motorcycle taxi (moto) (~200-1,000 RWF) - Motorcycle taxis are widely used for short hops and quick trips within Muhanga. They are fast in traffic but carry safety risks-insist on a helmet where available and agree the fare beforehand.
