Römerberg is the historic market square in Frankfurt’s Altstadt and has been the city’s civic and ceremonial centre for centuries. It is flanked by the medieval Römer city hall complex and a row of reconstructed half-timbered houses that define the square’s appearance.

The square features the centrally placed Fountain of Justice (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen) and is adjacent to important landmarks such as St. Nicholas Church and the Frankfurt Cathedral within easy walking distance. The area is a focal point for events, markets and sightseeing, and is compact enough to be explored on foot in a short visit.

The Römer complex itself has been used as Frankfurt’s city hall since the early 15th century, and many surrounding buildings were rebuilt after wartime destruction to restore the historic streetscape. Over time the square has remained the ceremonial heart of Frankfurt, combining municipal functions with tourism and market activity.

Römerberg sits in central Frankfurt am Main in the state of Hesse, a short walk from the Main River and Frankfurt Cathedral, and is part of the city’s pedestrianised old town area.

• Römer (city hall): The Römer complex is the historic city hall ensemble, a group of medieval buildings that has served as Frankfurt’s municipal seat since the 15th century.
• Fountain of Justice: The Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen, a decorative fountain featuring the figure of Justice, stands in the square’s centre and is a common focal point for visitors.
• Surrounding buildings: Historic half-timbered houses and reconstructed façades define the square’s northern and eastern sides, alongside nearby St. Nicholas Church and the Frankfurt Cathedral within a short walk.

Römerberg is in Frankfurt’s Altstadt (city centre). Take the Rhein-Main S-Bahn (lines S1-S6, S8, S9) or regional trains to Hauptwache or Konstablerwache and then walk about 5-10 minutes to the Römerberg; from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof it’s roughly a 15-20 minute walk (about 1.5-2 km) or a short taxi ride. If driving within Frankfurt, the square is in the pedestrianised old town near the river - from the Hauptbahnhof it’s about a 2 km drive.

• Visit very early on a weekday (before 9:00) for clean photos of the façades and far fewer tourists; the square fills quickly mid‑morning and is especially busy at weekends and during the Christmas market.
• Use the Dom/Römer U‑Bahn stop or approach from the quieter Paulsplatz side rather than coming straight from Hauptwache to avoid the densest flows of people entering the square.
• Don't miss Saalgasse-the narrow reconstructed medieval lane behind the Römer buildings; it's quieter, better for detail photos and gives a sense of how the old quarter looked before WWII reconstruction.
