The Richat Structure is a large, circular geological formation in the Sahara Desert of Mauritania’s Adrar region, easily visible from satellite imagery and aircraft. It is often nicknamed the ‘Eye of the Sahara’ because of its concentric ringed appearance.
The feature consists of multiple concentric rings of exposed bedrock and ridges forming a roughly circular pattern some 40 kilometres in diameter; the rings reveal sedimentary and igneous rock layers that have been differentially eroded. The structure is of geological interest rather than archaeological significance.
Scientific interpretation describes the feature as an eroded dome or anticline where concentric layers have been exposed and worn down over long time scales, rather than the result of a meteorite impact. The Richat Structure has been studied for its stratigraphy and unusual geomorphology.
It sits in the arid Adrar plateau of central Mauritania near scattered oases and the historic caravan town of Ouadane, within a remote part of the Sahara that is accessible by vehicle from regional centres.
