Main image

Red Square is Moscow’s principal historic square located next to the Kremlin in the city’s centre, forming a symbolic and civic heart of Russia. The square is internationally recognised for its monumental buildings and its role in national events.

The square is lined by world-famous landmarks including Saint Basil’s Cathedral with its distinctive multicoloured domes, the historic GUM shopping arcade and a prominent memorial tomb in the centre. It functions as an open public space used for parades, ceremonies and large public gatherings.

The open paved surface provides unhindered views of the Kremlin walls and towers to the west and historic facades to the east, making it a primary orientation point for sightseeing in central Moscow. Visitors typically walk the perimeter to access museums, shops and the cathedral.

Existing in recognizable form since the late medieval period, the square developed as Moscow’s main urban space and marketplace and later became the site of public ceremonies and state displays. Its present ensemble of buildings reflects construction phases from the 16th century through the 19th century and Soviet-era additions.

Occupying a central position in Moscow, Red Square sits immediately east of the Kremlin and is served by multiple metro stations; it is in the historic core of the city and is a short walk from major central hotels and transport hubs.

  • Timing tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid peak visitor crowds; some interiors have limited opening hours or separate admission.
  • Practical detail: Photography rules vary for interiors and memorial areas; follow posted signage and security guidance on the square.

What to See #

  • Saint Basil's Cathedral: A 16th-century Orthodox cathedral with onion domes famed for its multicoloured exterior and compact architecture, built between 1555 and 1561 on orders of Ivan the Terrible.
  • GUM Department Store: A large historic department store and shopping arcade on the square's eastern side, dating from the late 19th century and retaining its glass-roofed galleries.
  • Lenin's Mausoleum: A low granite tomb built on the square serving as the resting place of a key 20th-century leader and also a focal point for visitors.

Tips for Visiting Red Square #

  • Go at first light on weekdays to experience Red Square with far fewer tourists and clearer photography lines; afternoons and weekends attract large tour groups and local visitors.
  • Approach from different streets (for example via Nikolskaya or from the GUM side) to get varied perspectives and avoid the densest crowds directly beneath St. Basil's cathedral.
  • Check the city events calendar before your visit-Red Square is closed or heavily restricted for official ceremonies, parades (notably Victory Day) and rehearsals, so plan around those dates.
