Qal’eh Dokhtar is a Sassanid-era fortress on a rocky hill near Firuzabad in Fars province, southern Iran, built around the start of the 3rd century AD. It is associated with the founder of the Sassanid dynasty and early imperial architecture.
The fortress was built by Ardashir I around 209 AD during his consolidation of power; it formed part of a network of defensive and ceremonial sites linked to the foundation of the Sassanid state. Over centuries the structure fell into ruin but remains a clear example of early Sassanid construction techniques.
The castle stands on a rocky outcrop just outside the modern city of Firuzabad in Fars province, in the Zagros foothills of southern Iran.
