How to Get to Punakha

Punakha is reached by road from Paro or Thimphu; there is no nearby international airport-Paro Airport (PBH) is the usual air gateway and then a 2-3 hour drive. Overland entry from India is possible but requires long road travel and border formalities.

By Air

Paro Airport (PBH): The nearest airport for Punakha is Paro; visitors typically fly into Paro and then continue by road. Road transfer Paro-Punakha normally takes about 2-3 hours depending on weather and stops; taxis or private cars are the common options - expect a transfer cost in the low hundreds of BTN.

Bagdogra Airport (IXB), India: Overland arrivals from India sometimes use Bagdogra then a long road transfer across the border; this route requires immigration at the southern entry points and a full-day (or longer) drive to reach Punakha from the border.

By Train & Bus

Train: Bhutan has no passenger rail. The nearest Indian rail stations used by overland visitors are New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and Hasimara (HSA); onward travel into Bhutan is by road.

Bus: There are regular shared taxis and inter-district buses that connect Punakha with Paro and Thimphu. Travel times: Paro-Punakha ~2-3 hours, Thimphu-Punakha ~2-3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Fares are inexpensive but variable by operator.
