How to Get to Phuntsholing#
Phuentsholing (Phuntsholing) sits on Bhutan’s southern border with India and is most commonly reached overland via Indian railheads and airports (Hasimara rail station and Bagdogra airport). There is no international airport in Phuentsholing itself; cross-border road transfers are the practical route.
Bagdogra Airport (IXB), India: Phuentsholing/Phuntsholing is usually reached overland from Indian airports such as Bagdogra or from Kolkata; international flights into Bhutan itself go to Paro, not Phuentsholing. From Bagdogra the road journey to the Bhutan border is several hours and then onward to Phuentsholing across the border.
Paro Airport (PBH): For internal travel to Phuentsholing you can also fly into Paro and travel by road across the country, but that is a long drive (several hours) and not the usual route for southern border crossings.
Train: The nearest Indian railhead for Phuentsholing is Hasimara (HSA) in West Bengal; Hasimara is commonly used by travellers crossing into Phuentsholing by road (short taxi or bus from Hasimara).
Bus: Regular buses and shared taxis ply the routes from Hasimara and nearby Indian towns to Phuentsholing. Overland travellers coming from India usually travel by train to Hasimara or by bus to the border and then cross at the immigration checkpoint into Phuentsholing.
How to Get Around Phuntsholing#
Phuentsholing is primarily an overland gateway - use Indian rail (Hasimara) or regional airports (Bagdogra) plus buses or taxis to reach the town and cross into Bhutan. For onward travel into the interior, private cars or scheduled inter-district buses are the practical choices.
- Cross-border trains (to Hasimara) - Hasimara railway station in India is the closest railhead used by travellers to reach Phuentsholing; from Hasimara it’s a short road transfer to the border. Check Indian Railways schedules and allow time for border immigration.
- Buses and shared taxis (India-Bhutan border) (Low INR amounts) - Frequent buses and shared taxis run from Hasimara and nearby towns to Phuentsholing; inexpensive and convenient for independent travellers. Services are subject to Indian and Bhutanese border hours and immigration checks.
- Local taxis and city buses (Low BTN/INR amounts) - Within Phuentsholing local taxis and minibuses connect the town, border facilities and onward routes into Bhutan. Taxis are useful for luggage and crossings to immigration offices.
- Private transfer to inland Bhutan (Depends on distance and vehicle) - To reach places like Thimphu or Paro from Phuentsholing, many travellers hire private cars/drivers; the journey is long (several hours) over mountain roads and often takes most of the day, but gives schedule control and luggage handling.
- Walking - Phuentsholing’s commercial centre is compact and walkable; border areas can be busy so carry ID and be prepared for short walks between immigration and transport points.
