The Preah Norodom Sihanouk Museum in Siem Reap is a small museum dedicated to Cambodia’s revered former king, gathering artifacts, personal memorabilia and historical exhibits that trace his life and his pivotal role in the country’s modern history.
Its centrepiece is a remarkable archaeological find: a cache of 274 Buddhist statues discovered carefully buried at the temple of Banteay Kdei during a joint Cambodian and Sophia University (Japan) excavation. The museum was created to preserve and display them, and archaeology-trained staff who speak Khmer, English and Japanese guide visitors through statues of different periods, tracing the evolution of Khmer art through changing styles and decoration.
