The Church of St. John at Kaneo is a small Byzantine-style Macedonian Orthodox church on a cliff above Lake Ohrid. It dates broadly to the 13th century and is noted for its compact cruciform plan and lakeside position.

The building’s stone and brick construction, domed roof and decorative exterior arches are typical of regional medieval ecclesiastical architecture. It is especially visited for its lakeside setting and views rather than as a large interior monument.

The church was established in the medieval period as part of the Ohrid ecclesiastical tradition and has remained a functioning religious site, with conservation interventions over time to stabilise the cliffside setting and fabric.

It stands on the northeastern shore of Lake Ohrid just above Ohrid town, a short walk from the historic centre and the lakeshore promenade.

The Church of St. John at Kaneo overlooks Lake Ohrid on the Ohrid lakeshore. From Ohrid’s old town and harbour it is an easy lakeside walk of roughly 10-20 minutes along the promenade; taxis and local buses also serve the town and can drop you close to the church.

• Go at sunrise for the iconic shots of the church perched on the cliff with calm water and minimal crowds; this is when the site feels most tranquil and you can get unobstructed photos.
• Approach on foot from the Ohrid promenade or take a short boat trip to view the church from the water - the lakeside vantage point shows the church and cliff in context, which many visitors miss from land-only views.
• Avoid the busiest midday tour times if you want to enjoy the small adjacent viewpoint and beach area; the narrow paths around the church fill quickly when groups arrive.
